HOW DO ADULTS WITH MILD AND MODERATE DISABILITIES FROM THE ARAB SECTOR IN NORTHERN ISRAEL EXPERIENCE THE TRANSITION TO ADULTHOOD, AND HOW DO EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES, ACCESSIBILITY AND MOBILITY, EXPERIENCES OF STIGMA AND DISCRIMINATION, ACCESS TO SUPPORT SERVICES, AND FAMILY EXPECTATIONS SHAPE THEIR INDEPENDENCE AND SOCIAL INCLUSION?

Abstract

Making the shift to adulthood is a crucial transition period for adults with disabilities, especially for people of color, in whom social, cultural, and institutional factors intersect. This is a qualitative study that followed 30 adults with mild and moderate disabilities from the Arab sector in northern Israel through semi-structured interviews. Data analysis was conducted in the form of reflexive thematic analysis, which led to five key themes: abrupt discontinuation of support services at age 21, the disability policy gap, growing reliance on the family, limited community support and social isolation, and need for sustainable transition services. The results suggest that barriers to transition are more likely to contribute to the transition process than the disability. The need for coordination of services, inclusive employment opportunities, accessible environments and ongoing family and institutional support to ensure independence and social participation was highlighted. The study brings culturally relevant information and evidence to the conversation on disability and transition to adulthood in a contextually specific way, and offers recommendations for policymakers and service providers to create culturally responsive, sustainable transition programs.
