MOTIVATION FOR READING, WRITING ATTITUDE AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: A STRUCTURAL MODEL ON RESEARCH SKILLS OF PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHERS

Abstract


The objective of this study was to establish the most suitable model for public elementary school teachers in Region XI with respect to motivation for reading, writing attitude, and professional development in terms of research skills. This study was carried out with a quantitative descriptive-correlational and causal-predictive research design and analyzed with Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The public elementary school teachers were selected using stratified random sampling, and 400 teachers were selected for the study from Region XI. Modified questionnaires were used to collect data, which were validated and reliable for content validity. Data analysis techniques were mean, standard deviation, Pearson product-moment correlation, multiple linear regression, and SEM. The results showed that the motivation for reading, writing attitude, professional development, and research skills are high. There were significant relationships found between each of the exogenous variables and research skills. From the three models generated, model 3 was determined as the best fit model, while writing attitude turned out to be the best predictor of research skills. Motivation for reading and professional development had nonsignificant direct effects, but were still important as they allow access to scholarly knowledge and learning conditions. This suggests that the research competence of teachers is closely related to their organization of thoughts, presentation of arguments, and effective communication of results. The conclusions suggest that improving the competence of teachers in terms of research training should involve improving writing attitudes and encouraging the continuation of research training and support programs for teachers. Schools should thus develop integrated programs for fostering writing skills, continuous learning, and useful involvement in educational research.
