EINE MEHRDIMENSIONALE TYPOLOGIE VON UNTERRICHTSAUFGABEN IN DAF: INTEGRATION VON GER-KOMPETENZEN, AUFGABENKOMPLEXITÄT UND MULTIMODALEM SCAFFOLDING IM SÜDSLAVISCHEN KONTEXT / A MULTIDIMENSIONAL TYPOLOGY OF CLASSROOM TASKS IN L2 GERMAN: INTEGRATING CEFR COMPETENCES, TASK COMPLEXITY, AND MULTIMODAL SCAFFOLDING IN A SOUTHERN SLAVIC CONTEXT
Abstract
This article presents a multidimensional typology of classroom tasks in L2 German instruction, designed for the Southern Slavic educational context, where German is taught as a second foreign language after English. The proposed framework intersects four communicative competences — listening, reading, writing, and oral expression — with four task-complexity levels — reproduction (R1), controlled practice (R2), transfer (R3), and free production (R4) — yielding a 16-cell matrix that integrates principles from the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, task-based language teaching, and multimodal scaffolding theory. The typology is operationalized through four concrete design-based examples developed in pre-service teacher education: a multi-stage written task on the topic Mein Haustier for 5th-grade learners at A1.1 level; a model-supported image-description task exemplifying S/R2; a multimodal oral-expression set combining picture-story narration, transactional bakery role-play, and a worked-practice variant; and an integrated 45-minute lesson sequence that links all four competences within the topic Morgens vor der Schule. The study responds to the empirically documented shortfalls of introductory DaF textbooks, where 69.2% of speaking tasks rely on template-based formats that constrain the development of fluency, communicative flexibility, and strategic competence, by demonstrating how the matrix functions simultaneously as an analytical instrument for evaluating existing textbook materials and as a generative tool for designing new tasks. The 16-cell framework was constructed through an iterative design-based process that involved 24 pre-service teachers, an inventory of approximately 280 tasks from the four most widely used L2 German textbooks in the region, and a sorting procedure that yielded substantial inter-rater agreement (κ = 0.81). The framework contributes to applied linguistics theory through an interdisciplinary synthesis of three traditions that have largely developed in isolation — the CEFR, task-based language teaching, and multimodal discourse analysis — and to L2 German pedagogy in contexts where German competes with English, by offering pre-service teachers a transparent analytical vocabulary that reduces the long-standing research–practice gap.
