A COMPARATIVE SEMANTIC STUDY OF THE MODERN CHINESE WORD “关” (GUĀN) AND ITS VIETNAMESE EQUIVALENTS

Abstract


Vietnam and China share a long history of cultural interaction and linguistic exchange. Throughout history, Chinese has exerted a significant influence on Vietnamese, especially through Sino-Vietnamese vocabulary. Although the two languages share many similarities, they have also developed different linguistic characteristics due to their unique historical and cultural backgrounds. This study focuses on the modern Chinese word “关” (guān) and its Vietnamese equivalents, aiming to explore their semantic meanings, grammatical functions, and usage features. By employing semantic analysis, statistical analysis, and contrastive analysis methods, this paper examines the semantic extensions of “关” and compares its corresponding expressions in Vietnamese. The study identifies the similarities and differences between Chinese and Vietnamese in lexical meaning and language use, and provides a reference for Chinese vocabulary teaching and learning among Vietnamese learners.
