Abstract

This study examined the skills and errors of high school students in reading graphs, specifically pie charts, bar graphs, line graphs, histograms, and ogives, at the University of Mindanao, Matina, Davao City. Anchored in Curcio’s Perspective Theory and Bertin’s Matrix Theory of Graphics, the research employs a descriptive qualitative design to assess students' graph literacy across three levels of reading: literal, interpretative, and extrapolative. Using validated researcher-made questionnaires and thematic analysis, findings revealed that a majority of students demonstrated low proficiency in graph interpretation, particularly at the extrapolative level. Common errors included misreading data entries, miscalculating angles and frequencies, constructing inaccurate graphs, and providing insufficient explanations or inferences. These findings highlight critical gaps in students’ graphical comprehension and reasoning, underscoring the need for explicit instruction in data interpretation and visual communication. The results aim to inform instructional practices and curriculum development, enhancing students' graph literacy.
