AN IN-DEPTH STUDY OF IDENTITY FORMATION AND SOCIALIZATION AMONG CHILDREN OF POLICE OFFICERS
Abstract
This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of children of police officers in Davao City regarding their social lives and identity formation. Employing a phenomenological qualitative approach, the researchers conducted one-on-one interviews with eleven purposively identified children of police officers. The data gathered were then thematically analyzed. The study generated three themes: challenges and lived experiences, coping mechanisms, and insights and lessons learned. The challenges and lived experiences of police officers’ children were experiencing a sense of privilege alongside parental absence, facing pressure from societal expectations and scrutiny, and navigating the pressure to meet high standards. When faced with these challenges, they used four coping strategies: self-determination, personal growth through resilience, seeking emotional release, and relying on emotional support. Participants also learned empathy for their parents' sacrifices, commitment to responsibility and integrity, personal authenticity, and a preference for supportive, pressure-free parental relationships. Significant implications include implementing work-life balance measures, enhancing family support programs, developing a culture of open communication, and engaging in community activities.
