REFUSER UNE DEMANDE DE SERVICE EN FRANÇAIS L1 ET L2 / REFUSING A SERVICE REQUEST IN FRENCH L1 AND L2

Abstract


Cette étude s’inscrit dans le cadre de la pragmatique de l’interlangue. Elle porte sur l’expression du refus, un acte récurrent dans les interactions verbales et constituant un élément important de la compétence communicative des locuteurs natifs et apprenants d’une langue. L’analyse vise à mettre en lumière comment des apprenants canadiens anglophones refusent des demandes de service en français langue seconde. L’étude s’appuie sur un corpus de données obtenues auprès de 12 apprenants et 19 locuteurs natifs du français. Nous comparons les stratégies de refus produites par les apprenants interrogés avec celles des locuteurs natifs du français. Les résultats sont discutés du point de vue des types de formulation et des procédés d’adoucissement et d’intensification du refus. Il est aussi question de mesurer l’influence du degré de familiarité entre les interlocuteurs et du statut social des interlocuteurs sur les choix des apprenants et des locuteurs natifs du français, ce qui permet de cerner un pan de la compétence socio-pragmatique des premiers.

 

The aim of this study is to explore the pragmatic competence and performance of a group of Canadian English-speaking students in refusing requests in French as a second language (L2 French). Data for the study were collected through a Discourse Completion Task (DCT) questionnaire that was administered to two groups of participants: a group of 19 native French speakers in Toulouse (France) and a group of 12 Intermediate L2 French learners at Cape Breton University in Canada. The analysis focused on the use of direct and indirect refusals and supportive acts (i.e. adjuncts to refusals). The findings indicate some similarities between the two groups regarding the frequencies of direct and indirect refusals and supportive acts. However, many differences emerge between the two groups with respect to the types of direct and indirect refusals employed as well as their linguistic realizations, with the L2 French respondents showing a less varied repertoire of refusal patterns. The results also reveal difficulties of the L2 French learners in the linguistic realization of supportive acts.
