Comparative effect of rural road transportation on cassava production among rural farmers in Abia State was conducted in Abia State, Nigeria. A sample size of 144 respondents was realized, using multi-stage purposive and randomized methods. Data generated using questionnaire and participant observations were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Result revealed mean ages of 31.9, 32.7 and 33.1 years for Ohafia, Umuahia, and Aba Zones respectively. About 88.3, 70.8, and 87.5 % respectively of the respondents were married and 58.3, 37.5, and 54.2 % respectively were males. A mean farm- size of 1.87, 0.9, and 1.25 hectares respectively were recorded in the three zones. A monthly mean income of ₦30,208.33, ₦23,645.80, and ₦30,687.50 respectively were also recorded in the three Zones. Result equally revealed that trekking (100%) pick – up van (73.6 %), motor cycle (72.2%), cycling (66.7%), and bus (56.6%) respectively were the dominant modes of rural road transportation. Rural road transportation affected cassava production via sales of produce (2.40), ranked 1st. total income (2.33) ranked 2nd, storage (2.30) ranked 3rd, quality of produce (2.15) ranked 4th, and harvesting (2.13) ranked 5th respectively. H01 is accepted since ZTAB (-418) > ZCal (-0.0324), therefore, there was significant difference between the modes of rural road transportation in the three Zones. H02 was rejected since Гs = 0.928 which implies that there was significant relationship between the three Zones. The study concludes that rural road transportation affected cassava production negatively when the roads are poor and modes of transportation slow and positively when the roads are good and modes of transport fast. The study recommends the re–introduction of Directorate of Rural Roads and Infrastructural (DIFFRR) as was the case in the 80s this will ensure the maintenance of rural roads and the evacuation of agricultural produce mostly in the study area.
This study examines the impact of rural roads and transport services on agricultural production in Kwara State, Nigeria. Data for the study was derived from a total of 546 respondents from three Local Government Areas (LGAs) spread across the three senatorial districts in the state. Ten rural settlements were purposively selected from each of the three LGAs giving a total of 30 sampled settlements. The data collected through structure questionnaire was analysed using the stepwise multiple regression analysis and principal component analysis. The results show that farm size, distance to major market, farming experience, age and nature of transport services available are important in predicting agricultural production in the area. Rural settlements in Kaiama LGA which has vast agricultural lands and high agricultural production were found to be the most inaccessible in the State. Poor transportation restricts expansion of agricultural production in this area, due to the low farm-gate prices. It is therefore suggested that Interventions in the transport sector should not be limited to provision of roads alone but should include measures that will help improve vehicle supply in rural areas.
The physical condition of various rural roads used in transporting agricultural produce in Ijebu North Local Government Area is of great concern, vehicle used to transport agricultural produce along the routes linking the rural areas are rickety and unsuitable for such purpose. A well-designed questionnaire, personal observation and descriptive and inferential statistics were employed. The respondents consist of (378) of the total population, while simple random technique was used to select 113 (30%) farmers and 95 (25%) produce transporters were equally selected systematically, 170 (45%) produce traders were purposively selected to gather information on socioeconomic , agricultural produce, transportation of produce and challenges of moving agricultural produce. The respondent use the following means of transportation in the study area i.e. walking, motor bike, bus, pickup van and car. Roads in the study area are in a deplorable condition, the type of vehicle used by farmers and traders depend on the volume of the agricultural produce, while petrol, maintenances, ticketing and extortion are the operating cost of vehicle in the movement of produce by the transporters. The research recommends among others things the provision of good storage facility, massive road rehabilitation, provision of modern public transport, empowering agricultural agency to complement the existing effort and extension of rail services towards enhancing transportation of agricultural produce in Ijebu North Local Government area.

Perceived Effects of Poor Road Transportation Network on Crop Production in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, North Central Nigeria2016 •
This paper examines the effect of the poor road transportation network on crop production in one of the rural agrarian local government of Kwara State, Nigeria. A well-structured interview schedule was conducted to elicit information from 120 crop farmers using a two-stage sampling technique. Findings from the study revealed that the poor road transportation network in their area had led to a reduction in their income, longer time in transporting produce to more buoyant markets, as well as incurring high transportation costs. Chi-square analysis revealed that there was a significant relationship between age, educational level, years of farming experience, and the respondents’ perceived effects of poor road transportation network for their crop production. The study recommends an urgent intervention from government and stakeholders in terms of construction and rehabilitation of roads in these rural agrarian areas in an attempt to help improve the livelihoods of the farmers through en...

Assessment of the Effect of Rural Transportation Cost On Agricultural Productivity in Ankpa Local Government Area of Kogi State, Nigeria2017 •
This study assessed the effect of rural-urban transportation on agricultural produce in Ankpa Local Government Area of Kogi State, Nigeria. Primary data obtained from 90 rural farming households were analysed using frequency count, Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression analysis and mean score from a 3 point Likert type of scale. Results of the study revealed that majority of the farmers were married males in their active productive age of 41-60 years and a household size of 4-9 members. Farming in the area was still on a subsistence level as only 22.2% of the farmers cultivated above 3 hectares of farm land. The major modes of transporting farm produce identified in the area include the use of tricycle (92.2%), motorcycle (70%), and pick up van (64.9%). Furthermore, annual cost of transportation and number of years spent schooling (education) were negatively related to farmers’ income at 1% and 10% level of significance respectively. The major challenges faced by farmers in transpo...
Food farming in Oyo North, Nigeria is characterised by an increasing use of Intermediary Mode of Transportation (IMT) to ease inputs and outputs mobility and farm access. To assess the influence on food farmer's productivity, a random sample of 230 respondents was selected and data collected on their socio-economic and farm specific char-acteristics. Descriptive statistics, Herfindhal Index and Technical Efficiency Approach were used to analyse the data. The results indicate that majority of food farmers were in their middle age with mean age of 50 years and most of them used one plot at a location between 5 and 10 km to their village of residence. They acquired land by inheritance and practiced intensive crop diversification as risk management strategy. The transportation modes used in addition to walking include bicycle, motorcycle, and car with increasing trend in the use of motorcycle. The mean Techni-cal Efficiency (TE) of food farmers was 0.82 with significant inefficiency...

Transport Constraints on Agricultural Produce in the Rural Areas of Ungogo Local Government Area, Kano State, Nigeria2018 •
Transportation is important in physical and economic development of towns and cities all over the world. Man, nations, regions, cities, towns and the world would be severely limited in development without transportation, which is a key factor for physical and economic growth. This paper aim to assess the constraints of transporting agricultural produce in Ungogo Local Government Area and seek to identify the means of transportation used by farmers to convey their farm produce, to examine the problems of transporting agricultural produce in the area as well as to assess the condition of transport system in the study area. The study is purely qualitative using questionnaire and interview sessions. This study revealed that, the condition of the roads is critical. The roads are characterized by seasonality due to the persistence deterioration of roads by erosion and poor maintenance by authorities concern. Therefore, the study suggests that, there is need for construction of roads and bridges to make rural areas to all weather access and government should engage in construction more feeder road in rural areas that will link different farm in the areas among others.
