The study identified mechanism for forest biodiversity protection and conservation for enhancing food security in Benue state. Four research questions and three hypotheses guided the study. Descriptive survey research design was used for the study. The study was carried out in Benue State. The target population consists of 63 extension agents and 25 foresters. The total population was utilized, therefore there was no sampling. A item structured questionnaire titled Forest Biodiversity Protection And Conservation Questionnaire (FBPCQ) was developed from literature and used for data collection. The instrument was subjected to face validation by three experts. Cronbach Alpha method was adopted to determine the internal consistency of the questionnaire items which yielded a coefficient of 0.71. The questionnaires were analyzed using mean to answer the research questions and t-test statistics to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The result of the study revealed that respondents agreed on most items on the erosion control measures in the forest, tools and methods used to control forest fire, mitigation procedures adopted for biodiversity depletion and government regulation on the use of forest. It was recommended amongst others that state ministry of agriculture should implement mitigation procedures for reducing biodiversity depletion and adopt measures for controlling forest fire.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the implication of agricultural practices, commercial logging and forest conservation in Ikono Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State. In order to achieve the set objective of this study, two hypotheses and tested statistically at 0.05 level of significance. Using Pearson product moment correlation analysis. The design used for the sampling was the survey research design while the sampling procedure used was the simple random sampling technique. A well validated 29-item questionnaire tagged " Implication of Agricultural Practices, Commercial Logging and Forest Conservation (IAPCLFC) was designed using the four point likert scale model and administered to a simple size of three hundred (300) persons drawn proportionally from the selected geo-political wards ". From the analysis, it was found that the two hypotheses were significantly related to forest conservation. Based on these, it was recommended that government should embark on an enlightenment campaign of the people, emphasis should be place on importance and benefits to be derived from forest resources. 1. Introduction Nature conservation is the most important challenge of the present century, nothing affects the quality of our lives quite like the welfare and state of nature and no future can be quite so bleak as one in which the living resources which are very essential for human survival and development, are increasingly being destroyed or depleted by human carelessness. Forest resources conservation is therefore very necessary for ameliorating these problems through judicious management of the resources for sustained yield and long-term satisfaction. Conservation of natural forest is the controlled use of the resources in such a way that its capacity to renew itself is not impaired. Conservation of the natural forest ensures the continuity of the benefits derived from them. These benefits are so important to man that they ensure his continuous survival on the planet earth. In Nigeria, the decline in the total forested area is now resulting in a widespread concern for conservation at both national and local levels. The worsening deterioration of environmental quality, Okigbo (1991) observes, has given rise to environmental movements, political parties, various organizations, spearheading political activism and campaigns for changes in policies, laws, technologies and development strategies aimed at safeguarding the quality of our environment. How best to avoid the unpleasant consequences of the current assault on the world's forest should be the concern not only of forest and environmental experts but also of communicators and educators. I believe in concert with other inputs, communication and education which are the vehicles of awareness can help not only in arresting but also in redressing the threatened plight of our ecosystem. This research intends to look into the level of environmental awareness and its effects on forest conservation. Useful recommendations will also be made in the improvement of forest conservation so as to generate favourable attitude towards forest conservation practices. 1.1 Statement of Problem Forests are of great use to mankind. The forest provides us with food, shelter, revenue as well as raw materials for industries. Forest also protects biodiversities, watershed, hydrological cycle and stabilization of the soil against erosion. Forest serves as habitat for wildlife, represent gene bank for declining genetic base of domestic plants and animals, tourist attraction and educational research. However, most rural communities depend absolutely on the forest for their farmland, livelihood and survival. Despite the importance of forest to mankind, the forest in Ikono Local Government Area is exploited through careless logging which has irregularly degraded the environment especially on steep slope and on fragile ecosystem. This problem has continued to occur irrespective of the teaching of environmental education in the curriculum of schools and the activities of Government and Non-governmental Organization (NGO's) towards preserving the environment. This study aims to find out if the level of awareness of the environment influences the attitudes of the people towards forest conservation.

Aim of study: The basis for sustainable conservation of any protected forest area is determined by the services it provides to the ecosystem and immediate communities. This study seeks to evaluate the services provided by the Okomu Forest Reserve that should warrant its conservation. Area of study: The study was conducted in Okomu Forest Reserve in Edo State, Southern Nigeria. The major practices of farmers in the surrounding communities are sole cassava and intercropping cassava with maize, melon and groundnut. Material and methods: The function system was used to evaluate the Okomu Forest Reserve, using a questionnaire containing a checklist of ecosystem functions. Respondents for the rural survey were crop farmers, while the urban survey were tourists from urban centres. Main results: Results showed that rural dwellers' important functions were food/nutrition, fuel energy, and fishing with mean values of 2.81, 2.49 and 2.04 respectively, while the urban dwellers’ important fu...

Shaping forest safety net with forest management and conservation in Gambari Forest Reserveoyo State Nigeria2018 •
There had been massive conversion of Forest Reserves into agricultural land without any meaningful effort by the authorities to halt the trend. The study evaluated the safety net roles of forests in relation to forest management and conservation in Oyo State Nigeria. The study was specifically conducted at Gambari Forest Reserve area of Oyo State. Purposive sampling method was employed in choosing the study area due to the high forest regeneration potential in Oyo state. Two hundred copies of a structured questionnaire were administered and retrieved. Both qualitative and quantitative (statistics) methods (such as Foster-Greer-Thorbecke (FGT), Gross Margin and Somer’s D models) were used for the analysis. The results showed that forests had the capacity of improving the livelihood of the poor particularly those that ventured into forest income-generating activities. For instance, the poverty gap indices were conventionally measured to be 73% but reduced to about 66% with a drop of a...

The forest provides cover to the land surface among many environmental benefits, including a major role in the hydrologic cycle, prevention of climate change, soil conservation, and preservation of biodiversity. However, due to anthropogenic actions, the forest has been degraded. This study examined the causes of deforestation, the measures for controlling deforestation and the management strategies of deforestation in Mushere. Questionnaires were randomly administered to one hundred and thirty-five respondents out of 190 registered respondents with the timber association. Data were analyzed using descriptive and Chi-square statistical techniques. The results indicate that males are dominant he deforestation activities. Further results showed that respondents cut down trees as a source of fuel for cooking, it further shows that agricultural expansion is the cause of forest loss due to the clearing of forests for agricultural purposes and settlement expansion. However, the manual method of deforestation is the major method used in felling trees. As a management strategy, respondents suggested cutting down a tree and replanting two, allowing trees to grow until maturity, and introducing of forest extension service. Respondents are aware of the negative consequences of deforestation and forest degradation. The chi-square p-value of 29.7 showed that there is a significant relationship between the effective management strategies of forests and the rate of deforestation at the 95 percent confidence interval. The study, therefore, suggested public sensitization, Public-Private Partnership (PPP) in tree planting, afforestation, and enforced policies to protect the forest. The study further suggests providing an alternative source of fuel to reduce deforestation.
