Within the political arena of Iran, parties, media and political activities are passing through initial stages; yet, they get suddenly active during the presidential election campaign. Hence, a proper investigation into the dominant discourses during this time can tell a lot about the politics of the country. The present paper aims at conducting a critical discourse analysis on the antagonistic discourses of Hasan Roohani and Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf to demonstrate how the former one’s discourse gets dominant and wins the election. The headlines of two supporting newspapers, Keyhan, supporting the fundamentalists, and Shargh, advocating the reformists, are analyzed as well to see how they try to back their candidates.

A New Discourse out of a Dark Atmosphere: Critical Discourse Analysis of Iran’s Eleventh Presidential Election2015 •
2014 •
The present study investigated the use of language for the representation of conflicting ideological positions of two main discourses Eslahtalaban, “the Reformists”, and Osulgarayan, “the Principlists”, in Keyhan and Etemad Iranian newspapers. To this purpose, 86 headlines (43 headlines from Etemad and 43 headlines from Keyhan newspapers) were selected from 4th April 2009 to 13th June 2009 and analyzed based on Holliday and Mathieson’s transitivity (2004) model. The research findings revealed that Keyhan newspaper’s coverage of Iranian Tenth Presidential Election tended to highlight semantic roles and processes of Principlists discourse while Etemad newspaper had a tendency to foreground semantic roles and processes of reformists discourse. In other words, critical text analyses showed that choices of the processes and participants enabled writers to manipulate the realizations of agency and power in the representation of action to produce particular meanings which were not always explicit for all readers. The research results also provided evidence to support the claim that news media did not simply reflect the social reality but made dominant ideologies in representing political events as well.
Language is an influential instrument which can control people's points of view. Newspapers are considered as one of the effective means to transfer information. This study has been planned to investigate Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach to the representation of ideology in three main English newspapers published in Iran, namely Tehran Times, Iran Daily, and Iran News. The aim of this study is to see how the discourse features are manipulated in the construction of the content of the social issues and to recognize the ideology reproduced by the print media. To achieve the aim, the theory and procedures of CDA as well as three aspects of the macro-structural level and three facets of the micro-structural level of discourse of both headlines and news stories were analyzed .The findings of the present study imply that media not only express societal events and realities but also mark clearly the ideologies behind the specific news. The results of the content analysis also reveal that there are slight differences between the content of these twelve news articles in terms of the macro-and micro-structural levels of discourse features.

Moving in a Gyre: A Discourse Analysis of President Rouhani’s De Facto Inaugural Speech2015 •
To win the attention of the audience, presidential candidates rely on their own rhetorical methods. Hedges and boosters as metadiscourse markers have been the focus of many studies as the communicative strategies enabling speakers to soften the force of utterances or moderate their assertive force. TV news was used as the corpus of this study, whereas most of the previous studies have focused on examining newspaper presidential debates. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of hedges and boosters in TV election debates of the two presidential candidates-a principalist and a reformist. Three televised debates made by Hassan Ruhani and Bagher Ghalibaf were identified and classified based on the framework proposed by Jalilifar and Alavi-Nia (2012) and Alavi-Nia and Jalilifar (2013). Then, qualitative and quantitative methods were applied to identify the frequency and the function of the hedges and boosters. The results of the analyses and chi-square tests revealed that, in spite of some similarities, there were great differences in the use of hedges and boosters between the candidates. In other words, they had different tendencies toward using these techniques, and eventually Dr. Ruhani could win the battle due to using such metadiscourse devices.

Media in general and news in particular constitute indispensable parts of modern life. TV news which contains visual elements in addition to the verbal aspects was used as the corpus of this study. In fact, this research culled out the ideologies of Iranian national television in presenting different issues. To be more precise, three internationally-significant pieces of news reports were chosen: one positive to “Us”, one hostile to “Others”, and one neutral. Then, these news reports were analyzed in detail and their lexical items, grammatical structures, and rhetorical figures were compared to find out about the differences. The results of the study showed that these three reports were presented to the audience via totally different strategies and ideologically-laden words were used to convey positive and negative meanings. In addition, the visual elements (angles, gaze, and distance) corroborated the findings of the verbal sections. The findings of this study show that lexical and...
