The aim of the research is to compare the impacts of mentoring services, delivered face to face and video conference on advisees' academic achievements. Mentoring services, made up with two different instruments, were administered to a group of advisees, composed of 32 university students. In the research, the multiple-choice achievement test, which consisted of thirty, 5-point Likert items, was utilized in order to determine advisees' academic achievements.

According to the recent literature connecting to institutions of higher learning, mentoring communication practices have two important features: interpersonal communication and communication openness. These communication practices may lead to an improved mentees’ study performance. Although many studies have been done, the role of mentoring communication practices as an essential determinant has been left unexplained in the institutions of higher learning research literature. Therefore, this study was undertaken to examine the effect of mentoring communication practices on study performance. A survey method was employed to collect selfadministered questionnaires from undergraduate accounting, economics and management students at a public research university in Malaysia. The results of SmartPLS path model analysis demonstrate that interpersonal communication does not act as an essential determinant of mentees’ study performance, while communication openness does act as an essential d...

Assessment of the Efficacy of a Peer Mentoring Program in a University Setting2010 •
In the present study, the efficacy of a formal mentoring program applied to fourth and fifth year students of the Psychology Faculty of the Complutense University is assessed. In this program, fifth-year students took on the role of mentors and fourth-year students, the role of mentees. To assess the efficacy, the group of mentors was compared with a group of non-mentors and the group of mentees with a group of non-mentees, before and after the program, taking into account the variables related to career development function (knowledge acquired of the academic setting and satisfaction with the career of Psychology) and the psychosocial function (self-concept, self-esteem, self-efficacy, and involvement). The results show a statistically significant increase in the knowledge acquired about the academic setting as a consequence of the program, both in the group of mentors and in the group of mentees. Moreover, the mentors achieved a better average grade in the subjects of the specialty...

Review of mentoring in Higher Education2023 •
Mentoring relationships between a senior, experienced faculty member and a junior employee, between a faculty member and an undergraduate or graduate student, or between a senior and a junior student is essential in higher education. The current review aims to emphasize the necessity of establishing organized mentorship programs at national institutions to enhance academic performance, teaching/learning effectiveness, knowledge and skill development, growth and development, research productivity, and community engagement. The mentor and mentee both benefit from the mentoring relationship. Academic advising, preceptor supervision, and supervision of graduation projects are different from the mentoring relationship as they focus on only one aspect of the relationship, whether it is the study plan, the study session, or the project, respectively. Mentoring is a mutually beneficial relationship that calls for integrity, decency, self-assurance, trust, and respect. Educational institutes and colleges should set up a committee to establish a well-organized mentoring program with all the necessary templates for recruiting mentors and mentees, and also for annual evaluation and feedback from all parties involved.

This study is aimed at exploring the rationale behind academic mentor’s success, as mentoring is a developmental process involving capacity-building, knowledge transfer and employee retention in organizations. This paper is a conceptual study conducted with an extensive review of relevant literature on mentoring. The reviewed literature centres on meaning, forms and types of mentoring, qualities of a good mentor, stages and benefits of mentoring, challenges of mentoring, mentoring and academic excellence. This study was anchored on the descriptive mentoring theory by Kram (1985). The study found that regardless of how well a mentor and mentee fit together, either in form or in a positive way, the relationship should be professionally structured as well as considered and respected by both parties. The study also concludes that most successful mentorship usually evolve into friendship with both partners learning and providing support for each other. This paper contributes in the exist...
