Politics in Adult Education involves ways in which knowledge is acquired, the dispensing of the knowledge and how to make use of it under different situations. Oni (2017} acknowledged the centrality of knowledge to education. Besides the sponsorship of diverse information, knowledge helps to check wastages, conservativeness in one hand, and on the other hand, promotes the ability to function better. As a field of education concerned with serving the populace with education this paper considers politics in Adult Education in the light of the potentials of positive transformational ability of education. This is exemplified under different sub-headings like, the historical and contemporary adult education, political aspects of adult education, suitable adult education programmes for a community what could promote political stability, and the place of distance learning.
This book contains four papers, each a chapter, that share in the discourse of Paulo Freire and provide varying perspectives on the ways to advance social transformation and achieve a politically literate citizenry as a democratic enterprise. The following four papers are included: "Exploring the Limits of Participatory Democracy: Prudent and Decisive Use of Authority in Adult Education" (Ian Baptiste); "Adult Learning and American Political Debate: Achieving Political Literacy Today" (Ronald Aronson and Karen McDevitt); "A Delicate Balancing Act: Adult Education in South Africa" (James B. Stewart); and "Democratization and Adult Education in Africa" (Kassu Gebremariam). An introduction by the editor, Daphne Ntiri, provides an overview of the papers and the viewpoints of the research. Each paper contains a list of references. (KC)

Most observers regard both adult and higher education as key for citizenship and democracy yet the worldwide contexts, appearance and expression of adult education and lifelong learning have changed significantly during the past 20 years. Focusing on ten countries (Scotland, Czech Republic, USA, Brazil, Mexico, Botswana, Ghana, Palestine, South Korea and India) and five international organisations, this book explores recent changes in their overall contexts and policies about adult education, how such policies intersect with developments in higher education and how they may contribute to debates on citizenship and democracy. It highlights several significant shifts: increased awareness of the role of adult education/lifelong learning in enhancing economic growth and social cohesion and mobility, challenging economic and social exclusion and inequality, and developing human and social capital; increased involvement of transnational bodies; pressure for increased global and national co-operation and competition between educational sectors and institutions; and demand for more integrated, accessible, relevant and accountable educational systems and processes.
