The objective of this study is the determination and comparison of the body composition and somatotypes of the elite level Turkish and foreign taekwondo athletes. Totally 93 taekwondo athletes, being 45 Turkish (27 male, 18 female) and 48 foreign (35 male, 13 female) in the age range of 17-27, taking part in the national teams of their countries participated in the study. Sportive ages, heights, body weights, body mass index, body fat percentages, and somatotype of taekwondo players were determined. The difference between the groups was analyzed by t test in independent groups. The analyses were conducted in the SPSS 16.0 package program and 0,05 was accepted as a significance level. No significant difference was determined between Turkish and foreign athletes in all the measured variables in the male and female athletes (p>0.05). It was determined in the study that Turkish male athletes were mesomorph-ectomorph and that of foreign male athletes were mesomorphic ectomorph, and that of Turkish and foreign female athletes were central. As a result, we can say that the Turkish and foreign national team taekwondo players have similar body composition and somatotype.
The aim of this study is to compare the somatotype of young cadet male and female taekwondo competitors. The subject sample includes 32 Croatian female taekwondo cadets and 30 Croatian male cadets. Mean chronological age of girls was 14.08±0.91 years, mean body height was 158.20±9.14 and body mass was 46.86±8.51. Boys’ mean chronological age was 13.80±1.45, body height was 161.81±12.79, and body mass was 51.06±11.10. Mean somatotype values calculated by the Heath-Carter method were 3.71-3.19- 3.70±1.42-1.02-1.14 for girls and 3.45-4.17-3.58±1.94-1.12-1.58 for boys. Based on a Category Chart, nine somatotype categories were found for female competitors and seven categories for male competitors. The majority of young female participants fit the balanced ectomorph (28.13%) and mesomorphic ectomorph (15.63%) category. Among male competitors, the highest percentage (43.33%) fit the mesomorphic ectomorph category, followed by the mesomorphic endomorph category (23.33%).There were no signi...
The identification of anthropometric characteristics aims to contribute in a greater success in youth sports. Certainly, the different and various body structures of young athletes dur-ing selection in various sports, are as well crucial (Malousa-ris, Bergeles, Barzouka, Bayios, Nassis, & Koskolou, 2008). Somatotype reflects the overall appearance of the human body and gives meaning to the total morphological status of the human body (Ross, Ward, Leahy, & Day 1982).The research was conducted on 100 males subject 17-18 years, football players (50) and karate players (50). The purpose of this study is to define the differences in anthropometric characteristics and somatotypes in athletes from two sports disciplines, karate and football, which different in their way of training and competition. The pattern of the anthropo-metric measures is defined by ISAK (International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropmetry), except the vari-ables: body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage (...

THE SOMATOTYPE AND ANTHROPOMETRIC ASSESSMENT OF WRESTLERS FROM SIVAS, TURKEY2018 •
Aim: The purpose of the present study was to assess the young wrestlers’ somatotypes and anthropometric characteristics in Turkey according to weight and age category. Basic procedures: The study was carried out on a sample of 86 male wrestlers aged 10 to 21 years from Sivas, Turkey. Various anthropometric measurements were performed (weight, height, sitting height, biceps and calf circumferences, humerus and femur width and triceps, subscapular, supraspinale and calf skinfold thickness). Anthropometric indices were also calculated (upper arm muscle area, upper arm fat area, arm fat index, frame index and Cormic Index), and Heath-Carter somatotypes were determined. Results: The results of the present study showed that the junior wrestlers (weight=80 kg) exhibited more endomorphy and mesomorphy than schoolboy wrestlers (weight=51.12 kg). The wrestlers’ mean somatotypes were found to be 2.81±1.05 (endomorphy), 3.71±1.28 (mesomorphy) and 1.76±1.25 (ectomorphy). Conclusion: Body structure and composition of the wrestlers were dependent on their weight category. The junior wrestlers’ characteristic type was endomorph-mesomorph, while the schoolboy wrestlers’ type was mesomorph-endomorph. In the wrestlers’ endomorphy and indices of body composition, considerable differences could also be observed according to weight category. In addition, muscle area was found to increase while fat area decreased.

Aim: The aim of this study is to examine some motoric and antrophometric attributes of competitive and non-competitive taekwondo athletes within the age group 9-12 years and to determine the difference between those two groups. Material and method: 31 competitive and 29 non-competitive licensed taekwondo athletes voluntarily participated in the study. The average ages, heights and weight of competitive and non-competitive athletes were 11,16±,93 year, 150,58±17,14 cm and 43,80± 13,97 kg, 9,62±,82 year, 137,31±8,80 cm and 35,24±8,28 kg respectively. Both groups have been practising regularly taekwondo for 2,5 years, 2 days a week and two hours a day. Flamingo balance test, test of disk touching, sit and reach flexibility test, long jump while standing still, 30 sec sit-up test, bent arm pull-up test and 10x5m push up run, right and left hand grip strength test and 20 m shuttle run of the Eurofit test battery were used. Body fat percent, body fat mass, fat free mass, body mass index values were measured. Such antrophometric attributes as hand length, calf and femur circumference, arm length, biceps circumference in flexion, arm span length were measured. Results: Results of statistical analyses showed a significant difference between two groups in terms of motoric scores (p<0,01, p<0,001), antrophometric characteristics (p<0,01, p<0,001), and fat free mass (p<0,001) in favor of the competitive group. Conclusion: Compared with the non-competitive group, significant differences in competitive group can be explained by their active participation in competitions.
