Background: Despite well documented and widely acknowledged health benefits of physical activity (PA), no study has examined the PA levels among the Jammu & Kashmir youth. The decreasing levels of PA and increasing prevalence rates of overweight and obesity among adolescents is a major public health concern. Objectives: The purpose of the study was to assess the activity levels, prevalence rates of overweight and obesity and to investigate the association between leisure-time activities and dietary habits among adolescents. Methods: A school- based cross-sectional study was conducted among 405 adolescents (14-18 years) from 16 randomly selected schools of Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir. Height, weight, physical activity and other lifestyle habits were determined from self-report. Gender- specific prevalence rates of overweight and obesity were calculated based on Indian Paediatrics Association (IAP) standards. Logistic regression was used to identify association between lifestyle habits and measures of overweight and obesity. Results: Of the total adolescents, 28.1% met the recommended levels of PA of 60 minutes daily, with boys meeting more than girls (41.5% vs 19.5%, p < 0.001). Prevalence rates of overweight and obesity was 11.4% and 2.7%, respectively. Logistic regression unadjusted for gender, age and location of participants shows that the odds of being overweight/obese was more among adolescents who are more involved in sedentary pursuits and consumes higher amounts of junk food and carbonated soft drinks. Conclusion: Low PA levels and substantial prevalence rates of overweight and obesity among the participants were observed. The results also suggest that sedentary behaviours, physical inactivity and erratic food habits are strongly associated with the obesity epidemic.

Incidence of obesity, adiposity and physical activity pattern as risk factor in adults of Delhi, India2019 •
This study investigates the patterns of physical activity, associations between physical activity and the prevalence of obesity (defined by BMI), adiposity markers and physiological markers. The sample included 418 adults of both gender in the age group of 20–55 years. Cross-sectional study and sample included adult volunteers of both gender. Participants underwent anthropometric measurements, blood pressure measurement and assessment of physical activity. Physical activity level was assessed using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ). Total physical activity measured in mean MET minutes/week was 400.3 for males and 265.3 for females. Males (34.2%) had slightly greater level of moderate physical activity as compared to females (30.3%). Over all, the ORs of lower physical activity were higher in females of all the anthropometric indices. Odds of physical activity in overweight participant among males were 1.21 while in females it was 1.696. The odds of lower physical activity showed association with CI (males, OR-1.118; females, OR-2.781, WC (males, OR-1.026; females, OR-1.194), BMI (males, OR- 1.211; females, OR-1696) and blood pressure (SBP- males, OR- 1.105; females, OR-1.237; DBP- males; OR-1.174, females; OR-1.355). No significant association was found between physical activity and AVI. Majority of adults were physically inactive. BMI, WC and CI were all significant predictors of physical inactivity. Physical inactivity was associated with obesity and blood pressure.

Frequency of Obesity and Its Relation with Physical Activity2014 •
Objectives: To find the prevalence of obesity among the adult male population and to assess the relation of obesity with physical activity. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study design was conducted from March 2013 to September 2013, in the four union councils of District Charsadda. The sample size was 400 according to WHO sample size calculation with 50% prevalence, 95% confidence interval and 5% precision. Adult males of age group 20-60 years were included in the study while male age either less than 20 or more than were excluded from the study population. A multistage sampling technique was followed in which initially the main city of District Charsadda was divided into clusters on the basis of union councils and then form these by simple random method four union councils were selected. A pretested structured questionnaire was used for data collection of various variables like age, occupation, average daily food intake, moderate to severe physical activity causing calori...

Association of overweight and obesity with dietary and physical activity behaviour among school-aged children in North India: a cross-sectional studyBackground: Childhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions in developed countries and developing countries are not far behind. This has profound public health consequence as it increases risk of persistent obesity and its complications. Changes in social and physical environment over past years have adversely influenced eating and physical activity behaviour including attitudes and behaviour of parents. The objectives of the study were to assess and compare magnitude of overweight/obesity and its association with dietary and physical activity behaviour. Methods: This cross sectional community based study was conducted in school going children of both sex aged 6-14 years in rural and urban areas of Jammu. Children were assessed for their dietary intake and dietary habits using new USDA multiple pass recall method. Physical activity was assessed using modified global physical activity questionnaire (version 2) and expressed in MET-min/day in different domains. Following anthropomet...

Background: Obesity is basically the imbalance between consumption and expenditure of energy leading to excessive deposition of adipose tissue and resulting in increase in body mass. Objectives: To determine the association of food habits, physical activity and sedentary lifestyles with obesity in school children of Peshawar. Material & Methods: this was a cross sectional analytical study carried out over a period of one year, june 2017 to june 2018, in different schools of peshawar. Probability sampling was done. 200 school going children of age 12 to 16 years of different private and public school of peshawar were inquired. Results: Out of 200 school students, 84 (42%) were male while 116(58%) was females with mean age 14.2 years. 30 (15%) were found obese, 73 (36.5%) overweight and 97 (48.5%) normal. 16 obese and 49 overweight students have no outdoor games. Out of 200, 134 (67%) had having indoor games and 119 (59.5%) had more than one screen hour. The mean of Transport used was...

Physical Activity a Determinant to Control Adolescent Obesity2016 •
—Introduction: According to World Health Organization, insufficient physical activity is the fourth leading risk factor for mortality and among the main predisposing factors for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) including obesity. Promoting physical activity is one of the major areas of intervention for preventing overweight and obesity (7) and assessment of the same among the adolescents is required for planning a preventive programme for obesity. Aims and objectives: To study the physical activity level and its socio-demographic determinants among school going adolescents in a small but growing city of Aligarh in India. Methodology: A cross-sectional study done in two affluent and two non-affluent schools in Aligarh, taking 330 adolescents from each group (total-660). Study tools included Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ) and anthropometric measurement of height, weight, body mass index (BMI). Statistical significance was tested by chi square test. Results: Among the study subjects, 57.6% (380) were males. Among all the adolescents, 28% were having low physical activity level whereas only 19.4% had high PAL. Majority of the adolescents (52.6%) were having moderate PAL. High PAL was found to be significantly lower among girls (5.7% as compared to 29.5% among boys) and adolescents of affluent schools (15.7% as compared to 23% among those of non-affluent group). A significantly higher proportion of girls spent more than 2 hours per day viewing Television (17.1% vs 9.7% of boys) and more than 10 hours per day in overall sedentary pursuits (10% vs 4.5% of boys). 10.3% of overweight and obese adolescents had high PAL as compared to 21% among the non-overweight adolescents (statistically significant difference). Conclusion and recommendations: PAL among majority of school going adolescents is inadequate. Behavior change communication and built environment for physical activity are recommended among adolescents with more focus among females and adolescents of affluent group for primary prevention of obesity.
